SKIP is Buzzing

There is something new happening at SKIP. We are abuzz with activity!

Not even a global pandemic could stop our dedication to serving seniors in the community and we are happy to report that despite the changes and restrictions, the work of providing innovative programming continues.  As those in the community can attest, the battle against social isolation of seniors existed before the onset of Covid-19 and will continue to be a challenge worth addressing in the months and years ahead.  As members of the general population experience these challenges for the first time, a sense of appreciation for each other is beginning to reemerge.  Here at SKIP, we have always understood the importance of building and maintaining intergenerational ties and it is exciting to see this issue becoming a hot topic. In addition to shining a light on the importance of intergenerational relationship building, living in the time of a global pandemic presents us with opportunities to develop new program initiatives designed to address loneliness and social isolation amongst vulnerable populations.  Buzz Me, the most recent initiative from SKIP is a local call in centre that provides callers with informal support services run by volunteers who are committed to mitigating the negative effects of social isolation. Developed in partnership with Canada 211, callers can gain information about resources in the community, schedule sunrise calls, participate in tea- time chats or just find a friendly voice to talk to.  Buzz Me Volunteers will be trained to offer a friendly experience with a relaxed, conversational tone. Though not a crisis line or counselling service, Buzz Me seeks to provide a genuine experience of connection for callers who may be feeling the effects of social isolation.

As a fourth-year social work student at Wilfrid Laurier University I am a recent addition to the SKIP team.  My work history includes guest service, support worker services, and social work with marginalized populations including seniors in poverty and individuals experiencing homelessness. I have been assigned the task of keeping everyone up to date on Buzz Me and I feel privileged not only to be involved with this project but to communicate the behind the scenes information to our online community. I am passionate about offering my experience and knowledge to this organization and to witness the ways that the current crisis enables us to grow.  In these challenging times, I believe that we can battle loneliness and social isolation the way we battle everything else. Together.

Be safe and be well,

Tina
